You may be shocked to learn that prostate cancer is the leading cancer among American men and the second leading cause of cancer death for that same group. For the nearly 190,000 men in the United States who will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, the choice for treatment can be an agonizing one. Please take a minute to read an interesting article entitled, “Taking Control of Prostate Health.” It is about exciting new research results from Duke University Medical Center concerning how a low-fat diet and ENRECO’s special-variety, stabilized, ground, fortified flax seed supplements, especially ALENA, may produce a positive effect on inhibiting the growth and development of prostate cancer cells.

New research from Duke University Medical Center offers information concerning the distinct opportunity that diet modification including a low-fat diet and ENRECO’s special-variety, stabilized, ground, fortified flax seed supplements may produce a positive effect on inhibiting the growth and development of prostate cancer cells.

The study, just published in the November, 2002 issue of UROLOGY, concluded that a diet supplemented with 5% stabilized, ground, fortified flax seed significantly slowed the growth and development of prostate cancer cells by 32% and doubled the rate at which the cancer cells were killed off by a process called aptosis. The National Institute of Aging, the National Cancer Institute and the Committee for Urologic Research Education and Development at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina supported this study. Dr. Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, Ph.D., R.D., L.D.N., Division of Urologic Surgery, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina, pointed out that since this study was done using a recently developed model of genetically induced prostate cancer (which mimics genetic prostate cancer in men), these compelling results may promise real hope to slow the growth and development of prostate cancer cells. Data from this current study bring additional evidence that confirms findings from previous studies.

The objective of previous research done by Dr. Demark-Wahnefried, Duke University, published in the January, 2001 issue of UROLOGY, was to prove the following: Dietary fat and fiber affect hormonal levels and may slow cancer progression. Flaxseed is a rich source of lignan and Omega-3 fatty acids and may thwart prostate cancer. The potential effects of flaxseed may be enhanced with a low-fat diet.

In this study, twenty-five patients with prostate cancer who were awaiting surgery were given low fat diets supplemented with ENRECO’s special-variety, stabilized, ground, fortified flax seed. When the tumors of the diet-treated patients were compared with those of historic cases, the results showed that not only did the size of the tumor not increase, but also in some instances, the tumors were actually reduced in size. The study concluded that a fat-restricted diet, supplemented with stabilized, ground, fortified flax seed may affect the biology of prostate cancer. The flax used in this study was the premium health/energy drink mix, ALENA, manufactured and donated by ENRECO, Inc.

Dr. Demark-Wahnefried, who feels there is potential to make great strides in the on-going fight against prostate cancer, said, “Everything we’ve done thus far has pointed in the direction that a low-fat diet and flax seed supplementation can have a positive effect on inhibiting the growth and development of prostate cancer. We just want to keep going!”

Duke University has “kept going” – with more exciting research currently in process. This new study, performed under randomized conditions, uses four different groups of men, given four different diets, which will allow distinct comparisons on each diet’s effectiveness on the prevention and complementary therapy for prostate cancer. The first group is following a regular diet, the second group is given a low-fat diet to follow, the third group is given ENRECO’s special-variety, stabilized, ground, fortified flax seed to supplement their regular diet, and the fourth group is given ENRECO’s special-variety, stabilized, ground, fortified flax seed to supplement a low-fat diet.
